Understanding Headaches: An Overview

Headaches are a common condition experienced by nearly everyone. However, for some individuals, headaches can be significantly more debilitating, greatly impacting their quality of life.

Exploring Two Common Types of Headaches

The most commonly encountered types of headaches in clinical practice are migraines and tension headaches. However, headaches can also result from underlying structural abnormalities in the brain or other physiological factors affecting brain function. Understanding the type, cause, and symptoms of your headache is key to finding effective relief.

Headache Diagnosis and Evaluation

Headache assessment begins with a thorough clinical evaluation, including a detailed medical history and physical examination. This is often followed by imaging, such as an MRI/MRA scan, primarily to rule out structural causes of the headache.

MRI scans are non-invasive, involve no radiation or contrast injection, and provide highly accurate results without side effects.

Most patients experiencing headaches respond well to medical management. A variety of over-the-counter and prescription medications are available to treat acute headache episodes and prevent severe recurring headaches. Additionally, newer injection-based treatments, administered monthly or every 3–4 months, have introduced an effective approach to long-term headache prevention.

Additional Strategies for Effective Headache Management

Interventional headache management techniques provide an additional treatment option for patients who do not respond well to medical therapies or experience significant side effects from medications. These techniques are often combined with medical management to enhance treatment outcomes.

Interventional options include ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and Botox injections. These procedures are typically performed in the clinic, allowing patients to return home immediately after treatment.

At our clinic, we offer a variety of neurointerventional treatments to address conditions affecting the brain, spine, head, and neck. It’s important to note that headaches can sometimes be a non-specific neurological symptom of a brain aneurysm. If you experience persistent or severe headaches, seeking a thorough evaluation is essential.
