Understanding Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous condition that occurs in men due to an enlarged prostate gland. This enlargement puts pressure on the urinary channel, which carries urine from the bladder to the outside, disrupting the flow and making urination more difficult.

Signs and Symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate, particularly during the night (nocturia)
  • Difficulty initiating urination
  • Weak or intermittent urine stream
  • Dribbling at the end of urination
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Inability to fully empty the bladder or urinate
  • Presence of blood in the urine

Treatment Options for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

There are various treatment approaches available for managing BPH. One advanced endovascular treatment is Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE).

What is Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE)?

PAE is a minimally invasive procedure that targets the enlarged prostate by blocking the blood flow to the specific areas of the gland causing the enlargement. First performed in 2009, PAE involves accessing a 2-mm artery in the groin or wrist under local anaesthesia and intravenous sedation. A small catheter is guided to the arteries supplying the prostate, and tiny microspheres or particles are injected to restrict blood flow. This reduces the prostate size, relieving compression on the urethra.

Key Features of PAE

  • Minimally invasive: Performed as a day procedure under local anaesthesia and sedation.
  • Duration: The procedure takes approximately one hour.
  • Recovery: Most patients experience minimal pain, recover within 4–6 hours, and can return home the same day.

Ideal Candidates for PAE

  • Elderly patients with severe symptoms who are at high risk for general anaesthesia or surgery.
  • Patients unsuitable for TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) due to bleeding risks.
  • Individuals who want to preserve urinary continence and sexual function.

PAE offers a safe and effective solution for managing BPH, providing relief with minimal downtime and reduced risk of complications.
