Understanding Genicular Artery Embolisation (GAE)

Genicular artery embolisation (GAE) is an endovascular procedure designed to manage pain caused by osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee joint. This minimally invasive technique provides both immediate and long-term pain relief by reducing blood flow to the synovium, the lining of the knee.

GAE can also be used alongside other treatments, such as intra-articular steroid injections, N-stride injections, or genicular nerve blocks/ablations, to enhance pain management.

Origins and Benefits

Initially developed to address recurrent bleeding in the knee joint following knee replacement surgery, GAE was found to significantly relieve pain by targeting the blood supply to the knee lining.

Procedure

Genicular artery embolisation is performed as a day surgery under light intravenous sedation, taking approximately 45 minutes to complete. Both knees can be treated during the same procedure.

  • How it works:
    • A small 2 mm catheter is guided from the groin artery into the blood vessels supplying the knee joint.
    • Specific embolic agents are used to block the blood flow.

Patients typically resume normal activities within a few days, making this a convenient option for those seeking minimally invasive pain relief.

Current Applications of GAE

GAE is one of the newest techniques for managing knee osteoarthritis and was first introduced in Japan before being adopted in the USA. While its long-term effectiveness is still under evaluation, it has proven to be a valuable complementary treatment for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.

Additional Services at Nuffield Vascular and Interventional Radiology

In addition to GAE, we offer various vascular and interventional procedures, including the TIPS procedure (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunting).

What is TIPS?

TIPS is a specialised procedure designed to address blood flow issues in the liver. It is used to manage symptoms associated with severe liver disease, providing patients with an effective solution for complex vascular conditions.

Our clinic remains committed to delivering patient-focused care across a growing range of interventional procedures.
