Introduction to Brain Arteriovenous Malformations

Brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare condition caused by an abnormal connection between arteries and veins within the brain tissue. Nearly 60% of those diagnosed with this condition are under the age of 40.

AVMs can vary in type, grade, and location within the brain, and the symptoms experienced by patients depend on these factors. In some cases, AVMs are discovered incidentally. Common symptoms include headaches, bleeding, stroke, and seizures. One of the most severe complications is bleeding in the brain, which can be life-threatening.

Risk Factors for Brain Arteriovenous Malformations

The exact cause of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is not fully understood, but several factors may increase the risk. AVMs are often congenital, forming during foetal development, and may occasionally be linked to genetic conditions like Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). While rare, a family history of AVMs or other vascular abnormalities can also elevate the risk. AVMs are more commonly diagnosed in individuals under 40 and may slightly favour males. Additionally, a history of aneurysms or strokes may indicate a predisposition to vascular malformations.

Brain Arteriovenous Malformations Treatment Options

Treating brain AVMs is often complex and typically requires a multidisciplinary approach. Available treatment options include surgery, radiosurgery, and embolisation. Depending on the specific type of AVM, some patients may benefit from a single treatment method, while others may require a combination of techniques. Additionally, we offer a range of neurointerventional treatments to address various brain conditions, including brain aneurysms.

Brain Arteriovenous Malformation vs Peripheral Vascular Malformation

An AVM is a type of vascular malformation, which refers to abnormalities in blood vessels that can occur in various parts of the body, including the brain.

While AVMs and other vascular malformations are distinct types of abnormalities, it’s possible for different types to coexist or appear in close proximity within the brain.

If you suspect or have been diagnosed with a vascular malformation in the brain, it’s essential to consult a medical professional specialising in neurovascular disorders. They can provide a thorough evaluation, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your needs.
