Intracranial Stenting

Intracranial stents are mesh-like tubes used as implants to open blocked brain arteries, improving blood flow to the brain. They are particularly beneficial for a specific group of patients who experience recurrent stroke symptoms and do not respond to standard medical treatments.

These individuals are often ideal candidates for intracranial stenting. At Nuffield Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Dr Suresh Babu, our radiologist, provides comprehensive care, including neurointerventional treatments like intracranial stenting.

Intracranial Stenting: Can It Treat or Prevent Stroke?

Intracranial stenting is a less commonly recognised technique used to treat or prevent stroke. In the Asian population, blocked blood vessels to the brain account for up to 25% of cases involving acute stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA), which is often a precursor to stroke.

Acute stroke, often referred to as a “brain attack,” occurs due to one of two main causes: a blocked artery or a ruptured blood vessel.

A TIA, or transient ischaemic attack, is a temporary stroke that lasts only a few minutes. Its symptoms are similar to those of a stroke but resolve quickly without lasting effects.

Intracranial stents are mesh-like tubes implanted to open blocked brain arteries, improving blood flow to the brain and reducing the risk of stroke.

Understanding the Management of Intracranial Stenting

The standard approach for managing these patients involves aggressive and targeted medical therapy. However, a specific subgroup may not respond to medical treatment and continue to experience recurrent stroke symptoms despite optimal care.

These individuals are often ideal candidates for intracranial stents. Specialised devices are available to treat blocked brain blood vessels effectively. Additionally, we offer a variety of neurointerventional treatments at our clinic, including carotid stenting and other management options for various brain-related conditions.
