Thyroid Nodules Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation provides patients with a non-surgical, minimally invasive alternative for treating thyroid nodules.

Introduction to Thyroid Nodule Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure designed to treat thyroid nodules with precision and minimal risk of complications. A specialised needle electrode is guided into the thyroid nodule using ultrasound imaging during the procedure. Heat energy is applied through the needle, destroying the nodule’s cells from within. Over time, the treated nodule shrinks and is replaced by scar tissue, while the surrounding normal thyroid tissue remains intact.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for Thyroid Nodules

RFA offers several key advantages for treating thyroid nodules:

  • Performed as a same-day procedure with light sedation.
  • The entire treatment typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Patients can return home on the same day.
  • Preserves healthy thyroid tissue surrounding the nodule.
  • Does not impact thyroid function.
  • Allows simultaneous treatment of multiple nodules.
  • Treated nodules do not grow back.
  • Leaves no surgical scars, with only a minor needle mark on the skin.
  • Ensures quick recovery, enabling a prompt return to daily activities and a normal lifestyle.
  • Effective even for large thyroid nodules.
